Other events that happened during the Power of 11 reading emphasis!

Throughout the week, older students read to the younger students so that they could reach their goals of 11 books by 11-11-11!  Reading lessons paid off as the  older students reinforced reading skills and asked the important   reading questions to check for comprehension, fluency, and understanding of vocabulary.

Teachers arrived on Friday dressed as a favorite character in a book.  Students were thrilled to see their teachers dressed as characters. Every where students looked there were teachers dressed as Pippi Longstocking, Junie B. Jones, Pinkalicious, Strawberry Shortcake and Dorothy!  Students could see the Scarecrow, Camille Cream and of course, several teachers dressed as The Cat in the Hat!!!  There were several Princesses, a Mrs. Bunny and Farmer Brown.  One teacher was dressed as IRA and came ready for a sleepover!!! Another very touching character was the teacher who chose to emphasize Veteran's Day by reading Patriotic books! She  came dressed as her husband who is deployed at this time.  The spirit of the day was contagious and went from great to even greater as students were able to hear snippets of two books read by Dr. Bowen (Imogene's Antlers)  and Dr. Cook (The Big Mission) in the cafeteria as the students ate. It is impossible to name all of the favorite book characters who showed up to emphasize the fun and knowledge gained through reading.......there were so many more. THIS was a day where the staff had as much fun as the students. To see some slides of the events of the week, click on the slideshow below.  Click on the actual picture to see a larger version.

Fall Festival and Career Day

The rains came, and plans changed, but that did not deter from a day of fun activities and learning experiences for the Van Winkle staff and students.  There were a variety of careers represented and children learned so much from the speakers.  Everything from a nurse to a meteorologist, and a Master Sergeant from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations came to inform students about their careers.  The Van Winkle students were also able to listen to representatives from  the Jackson Police and Fire Departments. Students listened to stories being told by a storyteller and also learned about our environment from the Mississippi Soil and Water Conservation experts .  There were so many more who came to share their career expertise with the students.  Pictures of the day's event are below.
